There is a new legal framework in the EU that companies must understand and how it will differ from the existing regulations. The General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) will apply in the UK from 25 May 2018. The government has confirmed that the UK’s decision to leave the EU will not affect the commencement of the GDPR.

Therefore our second speaker is from TeraByte IT, headquartered in Darlington. The company will be represented by Managing Director, Laura Dempsey, who will be providing information about the new regulations for data protection. The changes will result in companies and clients asking how you store their data and your own, to ensure they are protected. The new legislation applies to all businesses from sole traders to large companies; any company who holds, stores or otherwise deals with personal data such as name, address and email, are required to comply.

Next meeting Teesdale Networking Group Weds 12 April 2017, 9.30 am

Our speaker for the next networking meeting is Dr David Baines, Senior Lecturer in Media, Culture and Heritage at the School of Arts and Cultures

How could Teesdale’s business community gain greater benefit and support from their local media?

Dr David Baines of Newcastle University is undertaking a two-year study into the ways in which communities can use local media to build and maintain mutual sustainability.

He is exploring ways in which they might make better use of the media, and what changes they would like to see.

The study is centred on Teesdale and the family-owned Teesdale Mercury, which has been serving the Dale since 1854. David hopes the lessons learned will not only help the communities in Teesdale, but others across Britain and beyond.

He will tell you about the project and what he has learned so far. But he very much wishes to hear your ideas.

As business and professional people you bring a particular expertise and understanding of the economic and social structures that support and sustain communities across the Dale, and have demonstrated a strong commitment to the locality and its communities.

So any thoughts and ideas you would like to share will be invaluable to his study.

The next meeting is on Wednesday 12 November at 9.30 am when Rachel Townsend Green of Thrive Marketing will speak to us about how the Internet has changed how people purchase goods and services.  Consumers are now in full control of the information they get and how they get it. Since 2006, inbound marketing has been the most effective marketing method for conducting business online.  Instead of the old, outbound marketing methods of buying ads, buying email lists and praying for leads, inbound marketing focuses on creating quality content that pulls people towards your Company and products (or services), where they naturally want to be.  By aligning the content that you publish with your customers' interests, you naturally attract inbound traffic that you can then convert, close and delight over time.

Followed by coffee/tea light refreshments and networking opportunites for all. For more information ring Lynn 01833 696750.

The group was set up by Enterprise House, with the help of South Durham Enterprise Agency. The idea behind it was to help connect small businesses in the dales and to combat the isolation working from home can sometimes bring.

The group comprises 50 members to date from all backgrounds and all sectors including book keeping, bakery, film making, design, archaeology, web services, public relations, financial services and business coaching.

Working from home can be very isolating sometimes and it can make it harder for people to access contacts and network in the same way as people who have an office facility, says Lynn Todhunter, Customer Services Manager at Enterprise House.

We try to keep the meetings informal and friendly with coffee and cakes but each month we have an interesting talk which is relevant to people's businesses. It can range from anything from search engine optimisation to media training. The group also swaps supplier contacts and works to help and support each other as well as networking for business purposes.

The group also benefits from a close working relationship with South Durham Enterprise Agency which is on hand to offer any business advice and support.
